Hey Hey my little Beauty Munchkins!
Since I’ve moved to my new apartment I didn’t really have a place to store my nailpolishes. I was really happy with the way I stored it in my old apartment, because I didn’t have that much space, but I didn’t want to use the same “technique” in my new place. Especially because it is purple and my new room is dark blue. So up til now my 208 (yes, I know I have a problem) poor little babies were stuck in a big bag, with no light and definitely not enough love from me.
Now I finally found the time to build a shelf for them and I thought I will show you how I did it.
A little disclaimer before we get into it:
This is just how I imagined, designed and built it. I know I’m not a professional and some things could have been done better, (e.g. I could have tapered the back side of the holes, so the screws and the panel together would have had a smooth surface, but I didn’t have the tools to do that) but it still turned out great in my eyes and I love it just the way it is.
All the stated measurements are in the metric system.
First up I went to my nearest hardware store and got the following things:
1 panel – 140cm x 80cm x 1,6cm
12 shelf boards – 10cm x 80cm x 1,6cm
10 wall plugs – 8mm diameter
10 screws for the wall plugs – 6mm diameter
60 screws to secure the shelf boards to the panel – 4,5mm diameter
You will also need:
a drill with different attachments
a measuring tape
a pencil
Let’s get to work :)
Step 1
Measure and mark the points on the panel where you want the holes to be for hanging the rack on the wall. I chose to go in 3cm from the edge and place 3 marks on the top and bottom and 4 right and left.
Drill the holes and clean up your pencil strokes.
Step 2
Measure and mark the points where you want the shelf boards to be secured to the panel.
I chose to leave a gap from 10cm between each board, except the bottom one has a bigger space, because I also wanted to store all my nail art supplies on this shelf.
I also decided to put five screws in each board. Maybe three would have been enough, but I wanted to give it more support. Drill all the holes.
To make it easier to attach the boards to the panel, I decided to rough-drill holes in the boards.
Step 3
Now you will need another pair of hands to help you place the boards on the right spot and screw them to the panel.
Step 4
Find a space on your wall where you want to hang this shelf and drill holes in the same distance as you did on the panel. Then put in the wall plugs. Make sure they go in all the way.
Hold the rack up to the wall and attach it by boring the screws into the wall plugs. Make sure that it is as tight as it can be – you do not want those screws to be loose.
DONE! :)
I love building stuff, so this wasn’t even close to “work” for me and I absolutely love the end result!
It is a great home for my precious collection. And I have enough room for all the new ones joining in the party :D
I really do hope you liked this post – or at least the shelf :D
How big is your collection?
How do you store your polishes?
